General information about bus services
-
Why might a bus be cancelled?
Buses may be cancelled due to the weather. For example, a bus may have problems in snow or on slippery roads despite having the best tyres, and ESWE Verkehr also has to think about the safety of its passengers.
Another reason for a bus breakdown can be that the bus engine does not start at the final stop. In this case, ESWE Verkehr's breakdown service must first arrive and get the bus running again. As this can take a while, the next bus is likely to have already arrived at your stop in the meantime.
A fender bender on the bus route can also lead to a bus being cancelled. In this case, an ESWE traffic manager must first come and record the accident. The bus is not allowed to continue its journey until then, and unfortunately some time will pass before a replacement bus arrives at your stop.
Of course, one of the ESWE drivers can also fall ill. As only a limited number of replacement drivers are available each day, it can happen that there is no replacement for a driver and the bus therefore does not arrive.
-
How does ESWE Verkehr provide information about public transport diversions?
ESWE Verkehr is in constant contact with the transport authorities of the state capital of Wiesbaden and the state of Hesse. In these discussions, there is a constant exchange of information about planned road construction measures that will affect ESWE Verkehr's scheduled services.
Acute incidents such as a burst water pipe or similar, which also affect scheduled services, pose particular challenges for us because we have to react at very short notice. As soon as all the necessary information is available, our colleagues in traffic control can draw up the detailed diversion plans, and these plans are then sent to the press office and the online editorial team so that we can inform our passengers in detail.
You can always find all of our diversion notifications here on the homepage of our website.
-
How can I register my child for the bus transport school?
You do not need to register your child for the bus transport school, as all pupils in the 5th grade in Wiesbaden automatically take part in the bus transport school. In addition, selected primary and special schools take part in ESWE Verkehr's Bus Traffic School.
The Bus Traffic School, in which pupils learn about correct behaviour on the bus and their rights and obligations when travelling by bus - in a child-friendly and fun way - takes place every year between the summer and Christmas holidays.
-
How are the annual passenger numbers calculated?
ESWE Verkehr's annual passenger figures are calculated using a statistical procedure based on our sales figures and so-called transport factors.
The calculation is relatively simple for a single ticket, as this ticket has a factor of 1, i.e. one journey per single ticket. In the case of a weekly ticket, it is up to 17 journeys, and in the case of a monthly ticket, up to 81 journeys.
These statistical values are largely identical across the industry and enable transport companies to make a reliable and plausible comparison of the total annual passenger numbers.
Battery buses
-
What are the advantages of the battery bus?
With the battery bus, you can travel emissions-free in Wiesbaden, meaning no emissions are produced while driving on our streets. ESWE Verkehr is already making an important contribution to climate goals on the one hand, as well as reducing nitrogen oxides in our air on the other. Additionally, there is a significant reduction in noise emissions.
-
On which routes are the battery buses used?
The locally emissions-free battery buses are deployed on most of our routes. In particular, the buses with the more powerful solid-state batteries are more flexible due to their range and can be used on longer routes.
-
What is the range of a battery-powered bus when fully charged?
The range depends on various factors. For example, the topography of the route, weather conditions, and the number of passengers play a role. The battery technology used also significantly affects the operational duration. The range can vary between 120 and 200 km. An intelligent depot management system takes all of these factors into account to ensure optimal deployment of the battery buses.
-
Will all buses be replaced by battery buses?
The goal is the complete electrification of the bus fleet in the long term.
-
What technology is used in the buses?
The buses are powered by an electric motor. The electricity for this comes from batteries stored on the roof and at the rear.
-
Are the battery buses audible to pedestrians?
The "eCitaro" battery bus type complies with EU Regulation 540/2017 regarding noise levels and is easily audible to pedestrians, including blind and visually impaired individuals.
-
Where does the electricity for the buses come from?
The battery-electric buses are charged using certified green electricity. This electricity is generated exclusively from renewable sources, is partially produced regionally, completely emissions-free, and contains no nuclear energy.
-
Where are the buses charged?
The battery-electric buses are charged using a new charging infrastructure at the bus depot on Gartenfeldstraße.
Transport and Service
-
Up to what age do children travel free of charge?
Children up to the age of five travel free of charge in the entire fare zone of the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV) and in the transitional fare zones, but must be accompanied by a person with a valid ticket for the entire journey. Different fare regulations may apply for the transport of groups of children, such as kindergarten groups.
Children between the ages of six and 14 always travel at the favourable children's fare.
-
From what age do I have to buy a ticket for my child?
With ESWE Verkehr, children up to the age of six can travel free of charge. From six to 14 years of age they need a child ticket, from 15 years of age an adult ticket is required.
If you are a parent and have a ticket with an integrated travel allowance, e.g. an annual season ticket, you can take your own children or up to three other children with you free of charge on certain days and at certain times in Wiesbaden and Mainz. You can find details of the free travel regulations here.
-
Can I take an animal on the bus?
In principle, you can take animals on our buses free of charge. However, dogs must always be kept on a short lead and cats and small animals must be placed in a cage or box. It goes without saying that animals do not belong on the seat.
-
How does the wheelchair ramp work?
All ESWE buses have a so-called ramp on the second door. To request the ramp, there is a so-called ‘ramp request’ on the outside and inside of the buses: a blue button that can be used to request the ramp.
The responsibility for opening this ramp lies with the bus driver. However, to enable passengers to board and alight more quickly, help from passengers is always welcome.
To operate the ramp, please grasp the ramp by the handle, open it and then slowly put it down. Caution! Please ensure that no hands or feet are trapped under the ramp.
To fold the ramp back in, please lift the ramp, hold the handle and carefully place the ramp back in its recess.
-
How do I register for a Nightliner return journey?
The Nightliners are our night buses that run up to three times a night from Wiesbaden city centre to the suburbs. A little-known fact is that you can also return to the city centre on the same route with the Nightliner buses. If you would like to travel back on a Nightliner, you must notify ESWE Verkehr in advance - at least 15 minutes before the bus arrives at its final stop in the respective suburb. The bus driver will be informed by us and will then pick you up at the stop of your choice.
The number to call to book a Nightliner return journey is this: (0611) 24 24 80 24.
Timetable adjustments
-
How long will the schedule adjustments last?
This is still uncertain. Our goal is to return to the regular schedule as soon as possible. It depends on when we have enough bus drivers available again.
-
Why was the timetable adjusted?
The reason for the adjustment is primarily the nationwide shortage of skilled workers in the public transport sector. Currently, we are missing about 50 bus drivers daily. This has already led to some cancellations in the network over the past few weeks. With this timetable adjustment, we are now able to maintain enough reserve drivers to offer additional services on routes with high demand. Our main goal is to be able to operate reliably according to the timetable again.
Additionally, for example, the entire school transport is exempt from these adjustments. The basic structure of the timetable has been reduced, but we still plan to operate significantly more than that.
-
Where can I find current information about my journey?
The online timetable information is available via the RMV app or the website www.eswe-verkehr.de.
In electronic systems such as the online timetable information, most changes as of October 4th are already included. Please check the RMV app or the RMV timetable information on www.eswe-verkehr.de for your connections. Planned additional services and live data are also available there.
-
Why are ticket prices increased when the service is being reduced?
Within the RMV fare zone, there were fare adjustments on July 1, 2022. The prices are set by the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV). Wiesbaden opposed the price increase but was unable to stop it.
The increases mainly affected single tickets, as well as day, week, and monthly passes.
The prices for the group tickets in Wiesbaden and Mainz, as well as the subscription, annual tickets, and student and senior tickets in Hesse, were not increased.
The reasons for the fare adjustments are the rising costs of energy and personnel.
-
Which trips are referred to as "school traffic"?
The trips you find here are carried out as school traffic without any restrictions.
-
Why is there no optimization on "my" line?
We know that the optimization from October 4, 2022, may not cover the full demand, and we cannot fulfill every passenger request. We deeply regret this, but it is the honest reality. Due to the shortage of skilled workers, there is currently no additional driving personnel available. With this timetable adjustment, we are pushing the limits of what is possible – had it been feasible, we would have strengthened more lines. However, for us, the new service starting on October 4 is a tremendous effort that is only possible thanks to the personal commitment of all our employees.
The basis for the optimizations made on October 4, 2022, included customer feedback, personal observations, and experience gained over the past years.
Nerobergbahn
-
How much does the Nerobergbahn cost?
The combined ticket for the ascent and descent costs 5 euros for adults and 3 euros for children up to the age of 14. Children up to the age of 6 can travel for free. Tip: For families, the family tickets or the group ticket (from 10 people) are also a good way to save money. -
Where does the Nerobergbahn start?
The valley station of the mountain railway is located in the north of the city of Wiesbaden, very close to the Nero Valley facilities. Tourists can reach the excursion destination by bus, train or car.
Enter the following address in your sat nav or navigation app:Wilhelminenstraße 51
65193 Wiesbaden -
How does the Neroberg railway work?
The mountain railway at the foot of Wiesbaden's Neroberg was opened on 25 September 1888 and has been transporting visitors up Wiesbaden's local mountain at a speed of 7.3 km/h ever since. This works thanks to an ingenious drive system: at the top station, the carriage is filled with up to 7,000 litres of water and then pulls the other carriage uphill on a steel cable. Once the downhill carriage has reached the bottom, the water is drained and pumped back up again.
-
When does the Nerobergbahn start running again?
The Nerobergbahn starts its new season on Good Friday and tourists can then travel up the Neroberg every day from 09:00 to 19:00.
-
How long does the journey on the Nerobergbahn take?
-
Is it possible to drive up the Neroberg by car?
You can drive almost all the way to the top of the Neroberg by car. However, it is worth taking the historic Nerobergbahn railway up Wiesbaden's local mountain as it offers a unique experience. You can park your car in the car park at the valley station of the Nerobergbahn and visit the excursion destination from there.
-
Are there car parks at the Nerobergbahn?
Free parking is available at the Nerobergbahn valley station, so you can easily travel by car from Mainz, Frankfurt am Main, Darmstadt or the entire region of Hesse.
-
Can I use the Nerobergbahn with a wheelchair?
It is generally possible to take wheelchairs (without electric drive) on the large outer platform. However, there is one exception, as electric wheelchairs cannot be taken along due to their heavy weight. We would also like to point out that the paths on the Neroberg are paved exclusively with cobblestones.
-
Can I take my bike with me on the Nerobergbahn?
For safety reasons, it is not possible to take bicycles with you. Please use the bicycle stand at our small museum (valley station).
-
Can I take my dog with me?
Dogs can also enjoy the beautiful view, as dogs are allowed.
-
Can I use my RMV ticket to travel on the Nerobergbahn?
No, because mountain railways are special means of transport with their own fare system. Therefore, RMV tickets are not valid on the Nerobergbahn. Please also note our separate fare and transport conditions at the stations.
Tickets and 'Increased Fare' (EBE)
-
Why can't a ticket inspector simply turn a blind eye if someone doesn't have a ticket on them by mistake rather than on purpose?
For reasons of equal treatment of all passengers, the ticket inspector cannot and must not simply turn a blind eye. The sole purpose of the ticket inspection is to determine whether a valid ticket can be presented at the time of the inspection - if this is not the case, the increased transport charge (EBE for short) is due.
As every passenger is entitled to equal treatment for reasons of fairness and neutrality, the ticket inspector cannot and must not take into account the personal reason or individual circumstances for which the passenger in question does not have a valid ticket. This applies all the more as the ticket inspector has no opportunity to clarify on the spot whether the reason given by the passenger is actually correct.
Moreover, the legal basis on which an EBE is levied does not differentiate between whether someone is travelling without a valid ticket intentionally or negligently. This basis - Section 9 (1) of the ‘Ordinance on the General Conditions of Carriage for Tram and Bus Transport’ - does not require any knowing or wilful fault, i.e. no intention on the part of the passenger being checked, for an EBE to be imposed.
-
What happens if I have a valid ticket (e.g. a weekly travelcard), but I can't show it at the ticket inspection because I forgot it at home?
As the ticket inspector in the case described has no way of determining whether the passenger checked actually has a valid ticket, the increased transport charge (EBE for short) is initially due in full.
However, there is a retrospective procedure that saves the passenger from having to pay the EBE retroactively in this case. This procedure is always (and only) possible if the customer concerned was actually the holder of a personalised, i.e. non-transferable ticket at the time of the ticket inspection, which he or she simply did not have with him or her at the time of the inspection. The passenger must present this ticket in person at our mobility centre within one week of the ticket inspection - instead of the EBE, only a processing fee is then due, which is currently €7.
-
If I don't have a ticket yet, but want to buy one on the bus, can I board at any door on the bus?
The conditions of carriage stipulate that passengers who do not yet have a ticket must always board the bus where they can buy the ticket directly. As tickets are always sold by the driver on our buses, every passenger wishing to purchase a ticket on the bus must always board at the first door, i.e. the front door. In this situation, passengers must also clearly express their wish to purchase a ticket by telling the driver exactly which ticket they wish to buy - and by having the purchase price ready if possible.
If you board the bus without a valid ticket and do not go to the driver immediately to purchase a ticket, you may be liable to pay an increased fare (EBE for short) if you are checked.
-
Does the obligation to board in front also apply if I have a pushchair or bicycle with me?
Passengers who do not yet have a ticket and wish to buy one from the bus driver should - if they are carrying a pushchair or a bicycle - board the bus at the second door for reasons of space. If possible, passengers should first inform the driver of their wish to purchase a ticket as they pass the open first door or, when boarding via the second door, signal to the driver that they wish to purchase a ticket.
Once on the bus, the passenger must then immediately go to the driver to buy the ticket. If the bus has already departed in the meantime, the driver must concentrate on the traffic; in this case, the ticket must be purchased at the next stop at the latest.
Any further delay in purchasing the ticket will result in an increased fare (EBE) being charged in the event of an inspection.
-
Can I laminate a paper ticket?
No, you are not allowed to. Laminating a ticket is prohibited by the fare rules and would render the ticket invalid – which would result in an increased fare surcharge (EBE) being charged.
-
How long is a single ticket valid?
Single tickets (and short-distance tickets, by the way) are valid – regardless of whether purchased at a ticket machine or from the bus driver – exclusively for immediate travel towards the intended destination. Transfers are allowed as often as necessary along the way, but passengers must always take the next available connecting bus.
Return trips, round trips, or interruptions to the journey are not permitted with single tickets. In such cases, a surcharge for fare violations (known as an “EBE” in German) would apply. There is no time limit for reaching your destination – the assumption that a single ticket is valid for a flat 60 or 90 minutes is incorrect.
-
How far can I travel with a short-distance ticket?
Short-distance tickets are valid for single trips covering up to three stops or a maximum of two kilometers. If a passenger travels beyond this limit, the ticket becomes invalid, and an additional fare surcharge (known as EBE) will apply.
At every one of our stops, you’ll find an information board indicating how far you can travel from that location with a short-distance ticket. Alternatively, the bus driver can provide details about the permitted travel distance. By the way, short-distance tickets, like single tickets, are only valid for immediate travel.
-
When do the names of fellow travelers need to be entered on a group ticket?
When do the names of fellow travelers need to be entered on a group ticket?
For the Group Day Ticket and the Hessen Ticket, the following applies: If fields for entering names are provided on the ticket, it is only valid when the full names of all travelers are entered. The names must be entered immediately after purchasing the ticket.
-
How quickly do I need to validate my multi-ride ticket after boarding the bus?
A multi-ride ticket must be validated immediately upon the start of your journey. According to the fare regulations, the moment you step onto the bus is considered the start of your journey. This means your multi-ride ticket must be ready to validate as soon as you board the bus. Anyone who starts searching for their ticket in a handbag or backpack after boarding, or who sits down before validating, risks being charged an increased fare (known as EBE).
The same applies if the stamp imprint is unclear: after validating, and once the device has audibly clicked, make sure to check whether the stamp imprint is legible. If it isn’t, go to the next validator and stamp the ticket again. Alternatively, you can ask the bus driver for assistance; they are authorized to validate the ticket manually by adding the time and date by hand.
This immediate validation requirement applies not only to multi-ride tickets but also to any event tickets.
-
What should I do if the ticket validator isn’t working?
If none of the ticket validators on the bus are functioning, passengers should immediately inform the bus driver. The driver is authorized to manually validate the multi-ride ticket section or event ticket by marking it with the date and time.
An unvalidated multi-ride ticket section or event ticket is considered invalid as a fare. During an inspection, this will result in a fine for fare evasion, referred to as an Increased Fare Payment (EBE).

From the second year of the contract, there is no additional charge. The contract can then be terminated at any time at the end of a calendar month.
Notice of termination can be given in the following ways:
