Winter break

The Nerobergbahn has been closed for the winter break since November 3, 2025. During the winter months, all routine maintenance work is carried out to ensure that it is ready to run again in time for the start of the season on April 4, 2026.

After the winter break, the Nerobergbahn will run daily every 15 minutes from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Please also note our separate ticket regulations and conditions of transport at the stations. Mountain railways are special means of transport with their own fare system. Therefore, RMV tickets are not valid on the Nerobergbahn.

Information on travelling with the Nerobergbahn

The Nerobergbahn is not a public transport system in the conventional sense, but a historic leisure and tourist railway. Some of the facilities are also historical and listed, which results in certain special structural features.

The Neroberg railway is one of the most popular excursion tips in Hesse and is known throughout Germany as a popular destination. Not only the beautiful view from the Neroberg attracts a large number of visitors from cities such as Frankfurt am Main or Mainz and other places in the region to Wiesbaden every year, but also the many other activities, museums and excursion destinations such as Freudenberg Castle or Biebrich Castle.

Nerobergbahn - a ride on a cultural monument

As a landmark of the city, the Neroberg and the historic railway have been a well-known excursion destination in Wiesbaden since its opening in 1888 and, as a technical cultural monument, the cable car is a real highlight for railway fans. With a total length of 438.5 metres, the cable car overcomes a height difference of 83 metres with an average gradient of 19.5 percent and thus amazes young and old alike.

The Nerobergbahn is the oldest rack-and-pinion railway in Germany powered by water ballast. As a funicular railway, its speed is regulated by a hand brake and the drive is based on gravity using water ballast. A real tip for railway fans looking for beautiful excursion destinations.

Noch heute bietet sich den Besuchern des Nerobergs fast das gleiche Bild wie vor mehr als 100 Jahren.   • The valley station of the mountain railway is located in the north of the city of Wiesbaden, very close to the Nero Valley facilities. Tourists can reach the excursion destination by bus, train or car.

  • The mountain railway at the foot of Wiesbaden's Neroberg was opened on 25 September 1888 and has been transporting visitors up Wiesbaden's local mountain at a speed of 7.3 km/h ever since. This works thanks to an ingenious drive system: at the top station, the carriage is filled with up to 7,000 litres of water and then pulls the other carriage uphill on a steel cable. Once the downhill carriage has reached the bottom, the water is drained and pumped back up again.

  • The Nerobergbahn starts its new season on Good Friday and tourists can then travel up the Neroberg every day from 09:00 to 19:00.

  • Die Fahrtzeit von der Talstation in Wiesbaden bis zum Endpunkt auf dem Neroberg in 245 Meter Höhe dauert etwa 3,5 Minuten.   • It is generally possible to take wheelchairs (without electric drive) on the large outer platform. However, there is one exception, as electric wheelchairs cannot be taken along due to their heavy weight. We would also like to point out that the paths on the Neroberg are paved exclusively with cobblestones.

  • For safety reasons, it is not possible to take bicycles with you. Please use the bicycle stand at our small museum (valley station).

  • Dogs can also enjoy the beautiful view, as dogs are allowed.
