The trip tip for the whole family
The Neroberg railway is one of the most popular excursion tips in Hesse and is known throughout Germany as a popular destination. Not only the beautiful view from the Neroberg attracts a large number of visitors from cities such as Frankfurt am Main or Mainz and other places in the region to Wiesbaden every year, but also the many other activities, museums and excursion destinations such as Freudenberg Castle or Biebrich Castle.

Nerobergbahn - a ride on a cultural monument
As a landmark of the city, the Neroberg and the historic railway have been a well-known excursion destination in Wiesbaden since its opening in 1888 and, as a technical cultural monument, the cable car is a real highlight for railway fans. With a total length of 438.5 metres, the cable car overcomes a height difference of 83 metres with an average gradient of 19.5 percent and thus amazes young and old alike.
The Nerobergbahn is the oldest rack-and-pinion railway in Germany powered by water ballast. As a funicular railway, its speed is regulated by a hand brake and the drive is based on gravity using water ballast. A real tip for railway fans looking for beautiful excursion destinations.

Nature, art and culture around the Neroberg
Even today, visitors to the Neroberg are greeted with almost the same view as more than 100 years ago. Set against a breathtaking backdrop stands the Neroberg Temple, beneath which lies the hillside water reservoir of the Neroberg Railway. But it is not only the magnificent panoramic view over the surrounding area, the Rhine, and as far as the hills of the Odenwald and Taunus that draws people to Wiesbaden’s local mountain. Just a few meters further on is the Russian Orthodox Church, whose golden dome towers above Wiesbaden.

Outdoor activities in and around Wiesbaden
The Neroberg is also an ideal starting point for long excursions and hikes through the vast and tranquil forests of the Rhine-Taunus Nature Park on well-maintained trails, or for visiting other nearby attractions. A paradise for outdoor enthusiasts: a forest adventure trail, the climbing park, dining options, and the Opelbad—one of the most beautiful outdoor swimming pools in Germany—also add to the special appeal of the Neroberg, which the people of Wiesbaden affectionately call their “local mountain.” Visitors can choose from a wide range of activities, exploring the surroundings of Wiesbaden and other sights such as Biebrich Palace, while enjoying the beautiful nature of the region and the Taunus.

How does the Neroberg railway work?
The mountain railway at the foot of Wiesbaden's Neroberg was opened on 25 September 1888 and has been transporting visitors up Wiesbaden's local mountain at a speed of 7.3 km/h ever since. This works thanks to an ingenious drive system: at the top station, the carriage is filled with up to 7,000 litres of water and then pulls the other carriage uphill on a steel cable. Once the downhill carriage has reached the bottom, the water is drained and pumped back up again.
