Carriage Regulations
Bicycles, Children, Companions for Severely Disabled Persons – Important Regulations for Transporting Items and People
By boarding, you automatically enter into a transportation contract that includes the following regulations:
- Verordnung über die Allgemeinen Beförderungsbedingungen (BefBedV)
- Gemeinsame Beförderungsbedingungen und Tarifbestimmungen des Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbundes (RMV) nebst Anlagen
- Besondere Beförderungsbedingungen des Verkehrsverbundes Mainz-Wiesbaden (VMW); in cases of doubt or contradiction, these take precedence over the RMV regulations.
You can obtain a printed copy of the RMV and VMW conditions of carriage and fare regulations free of charge from one of our service points.
Children
Children under six years old can generally travel for free. On ferries, the free transport is limited to three children. Children under four years old must be accompanied by a person at least six years old when using public transport.
Transporting Strollers and Luggage
If you hold a valid ticket, you can bring one stroller and luggage for free.
Severely Disabled Persons and Companions
Severely disabled persons can use public transport for free according to § 228, Paragraph 1 of the German Social Code – Book IX (SGB IX). To prove eligibility, you must present your valid disability ID card and the accompanying document with the attached or integrated valid stamp from the benefits office.
Companions of severely disabled persons are generally transported free of charge if the right to bring a companion is indicated on the disability ID card. Additionally, a dog may be transported for free along with the companion.
Wheelchairs and other orthopedic aids can be transported for free if the passenger holds a valid ticket or a disability ID card with the accompanying document and the attached or integrated valid stamp, provided the vehicle's design allows for such transport. Severely disabled persons with the "G" (walking impaired) or "aG" (exceptionally walking impaired) markings on their ID can bring a bicycle on regional trains and S-Bahn trains in accordance with VBB Tariff, Part A, § 11.
Bicycle Transport
In addition to the joint RMV transportation conditions and fare regulations, the following applies: Bicycle transport is free of charge. A maximum of four bicycles can be transported, provided there is sufficient space. Passengers with strollers or wheelchairs have priority. If needed, enough bicycles must be removed to ensure safe transport.
In case of doubt, the decision of the transport staff is binding. In such cases, passengers maintain the right to be transported on a subsequent vehicle. Due to limited space, it is recommended not to bring bicycles during peak hours.

Transporting Animals
In general, transported animals must not endanger the safety of operations or disturb passengers. The transport staff will decide on the transport of animals on a case-by-case basis.
Small pets (up to the size of a house cat) that are harmless and kept in closed containers (e.g., pet carriers) like hand luggage can be transported. The containers must be designed to avoid any inconvenience to people or property.
Additionally, dogs that are not or cannot be kept in containers like hand luggage can be transported if they are on a leash and fitted with a suitable muzzle. Transporting dogs on certain vehicles may be prohibited through announcements in the timetable. Guide dogs for the blind and assistance dogs for disabled persons, including those in training, are exempt from these regulations.
Guide dogs accompanying a blind person, as well as dogs brought by severely disabled persons whose disability ID card authorizes a companion (guide dogs and assistance dogs as per § 228 Paragraph 6 No. 2 SGB I), are always permitted for transport.
Animals are not allowed to occupy seats.
