Wiesbaden is getting a new bus network. With the network reform scheduled for 3 October 2027, the City of Wiesbaden and ESWE Verkehr are fundamentally reshaping public transport. The goal is to create an attractive, easy-to-understand, and fully accessible service that makes public transport a genuine alternative to the car, offering reliable connections across all parts of the city.
The development of the new network began in 2022 with the preparation of a new Public Transport Plan for Wiesbaden, developed jointly with the Rheingau-Taunus District. The objective was to create an attractive, clearly structured, and easy-to-understand network that supports sustainable and climate-friendly mobility.
To achieve this, extensive analyses were carried out to better understand travel patterns, identify gaps in the existing network, and address inefficient or indirect connections. These efforts were complemented by a large-scale public consultation, which generated more than 1,500 comments and suggestions from residents, as well as a detailed mobility simulation that modelled approximately one million journeys on a representative weekday.
In October 2023, an initial consultant draft of a possible future network was presented to the public. At the same time, a second consultation phase gave residents and stakeholders the opportunity to review the proposal and provide further feedback, ensuring that the dialogue with passengers and the wider community continued throughout the planning process.
The result is a clearly structured network with distinct service categories, easy-to-understand route numbering, and coordinated service frequencies. Improved connections within Wiesbaden and to the surrounding region are key features of the proposed network.

Why Does Wiesbaden Need a New Network?
Mobility needs in Wiesbaden are changing. The existing network, whose core structure dates back to 1969, has reached its limits in some areas and can only meet today’s requirements to a limited extent.
For this reason, the City of Wiesbaden and ESWE Verkehr, supported by external transport consultants, began developing a new network in 2022 to address the following challenges:
Wiesbaden's New Bus Network
With the introduction of the new bus network, local public transport in Wiesbaden will be fundamentally reorganized. While the main transport corridors will continue to be served at high frequencies, the new network is characterized in particular by new direct connections, the expansion of services to previously unserved streets and neighborhoods, a significant extension of night services, and the integration of major urban development projects.
The new network will largely be operated using the current vehicle fleet and existing staffing levels, while at the same time delivering a noticeable increase in service capacity. Over the coming years, some standard buses will be replaced by articulated buses, further enhancing the network’s ability to meet growing demand and maximize its benefits for passengers.
Benefits of the New Bus Network
Improved Reliability
Travel times have been reviewed and adjusted using current traffic and operational data. Additional recovery time has been built into schedules to help reduce delays and improve reliability.
Expanded Connectivity and Coverage
Numerous new direct connections will provide faster and more convenient journeys across the city. In addition, areas such as Friedrich-Ebert-Allee, Aukammallee, Holzstraße, Neroberg, and Maaraue will be newly integrated into the network, improving accessibility and expanding public transport coverage.
Greater Clarity
The new network is designed to be easier to understand and navigate, making public transport more intuitive and user-friendly for all passengers.
Extended Service Hours
With the new network, bus services will operate around the clock across Wiesbaden, providing passengers with reliable public transport at any time of day or night.
Implementation Timeline
The feedback and suggestions submitted by residents were evaluated and incorporated into the planning process.
The strategic foundations for the new network were formally approved through the political decision-making process.
Planning for the implementation of the new network is currently being further refined. This includes the development of future timetables, the detailed coordination of individual routes, and the planning of transfer opportunities and connections.
The objective is to provide a reliable and customer-focused service that meets the requirements of a modern public transport system.
Further information on the current planning status is available in the ongoing Sitzungsvorlage 26-V-05-0009 im Politischen Informationssystem Wiesbaden (PIWi) (in German).
Alongside the detailed planning process, the infrastructure required for the new network is being prepared. This includes the planning of new bus stops and additional boarding areas, as well as modifications to roads, intersections, and traffic signal systems.
These measures are intended to enhance the reliability, punctuality, and overall performance of bus services, while creating the conditions for a successful launch of the new network.
At its meeting on 10 December 2026, the City Council of the State Capital Wiesbaden will once again consider the implementation of the local bus network reform. The proposed network map and individual route alignments are scheduled for approval.

Well ahead of implementation, a comprehensive information campaign will be launched. In cooperation with a communications agency, ESWE Verkehr is developing a range of information and support services to help passengers prepare for the upcoming changes.
These will include dedicated online resources, digital services, printed information materials, and additional guidance measures before and after the launch of the new network.
With the launch of the new network, Wiesbaden will benefit from a more streamlined, better connected, and future-ready bus system. Improved connections, optimized journey times, and convenient transfer opportunities will make many destinations faster and easier to reach. New stops and infrastructure enhancements will further support a more reliable and efficient bus service.
Following implementation, the new network will be subject to ongoing monitoring and evaluation. In cooperation with RheinMain University of Applied Sciences, the effects of the network reform will be systematically assessed, including changes in passenger demand, accessibility, and customer experience.
The findings will support the ongoing development and improvement of public transport services.
